Human Rights Commissioner, Dept of Foreign Affairs, Oireachtas Foreign Affairs Committee and other significant players from civic society.
  • Programme adviser to Glencree for study visit to Dublin by Haitian civic society and business leaders to explore the Irish peace process
  • Preparation of research material for Fianna Fáil as part of its renewal programme
  • Work with Cobden Partners See Gordon Kerr’s The Law of Opposites

Career Path:

Special Adviser/Programme Manager to the Minister for Defence

November 2004 – February 2010 (5 years 4 months)

  • Provided political and policy advice to the Minister for Defence.
  • Monitored and oversaw the delivery of the Government’s strategic programme in a department with an annual budget of over €1 Billion.
  • Oversaw drafting of ministerial speeches and statements, press releases, parliamentary questions, was also involved in preparation of memorandums and material for Cabinet meetings.
  • Worked with Minister in Irish participation in UN mandated peace support operations in Chad (EUFor), Lebanon (UNIFIL), Kosovo (KFor) and Bosnia Herzegovina (Althea)


Independent Public Affairs Consultant  – Derek Mooney & Associates

May 1996 – September 2004 (8 years 5 months)


The Irish Property Owners Association – Provided PR & Public Affairs consultancy to the recently established national representative group for providers of private rented accommodation: including participation in the Commission on the Private Rented Sector. . Organised the annual UIPI conference in Dublin Castle (UIPI is the EU wide umbrella organisation for the private rented sector)

The Irish Nightclub Industry Association – acted as Chief Executive/General Secretary for 3 year period on part-time basis. Restructured the association and established his rules of governance. Increased its paid membership by 400%. Managed INIA’s public affairs & communications.

Irish Hotels Federation – worked as a consultant to the IHF in its campaign on reforming copyright legislation.

Rehab Group Monitored Irish parliamentary proceedings and EU institutions on developments pertinent to the disability sector for Rehab Group’s public affairs section – produced monthly reports, 1998 – 2003.

Glencree Middle Eastern Peace Project: Glencree Centre for Peace & Reconciliation introducing Palestinian & Israeli politicians to key figures in the Irish Peace Process. Brought groups to Ireland and also attended meetings in Knesset (Jerusalem) and Palestinian Legislative Assembly in Ramallah (West Bank) in 2004
